The Problem

Millions of small business owners use FreshBooks to send invoices, collect payment from clients, organize expenses, collaborate with their teams, among other things.

Because FreshBooks touches so many parts of their business, many owners log in often to see if they’ve gotten paid, how much time their team has tracked and so on.

However, FreshBooks did not have a consistent and holistic way for owners to see what’s happened in their account and what, if anything, needed their attention. This caused two main problems:

Problem #1: after logging in, owners had to hunt in separate areas of their account for updates, which was inefficient and made them more likely to miss important information.

Problem #2: without a clear design pattern to follow, different teams at FreshBooks had been using various design patterns to communicate important information to users, leading to a fragmented user experience.
